About Camp Esquagama

At Camp Esquagama, we believe kids need time to be kids and that’s exactly what we’re here to provide.

Since 1935, campers have been building friendships, gaining confidence, and creating lifelong memories on the shores of Lake Esquagama. Located in northern Minnesota, just a few hours from the Twin Cities and an hour from Duluth, our 45-acre camp offers the perfect setting for a summer filled with adventure, connection, and time spent outdoors.

A note from our Camp Director:

Hey Camp Families,

There’s something special about summer at Camp Esquagama and if you’ve been here before, you know exactly what I mean.

It’s the sound of laughter echoing through the pines.
It’s the splash of the lake on a warm afternoon.
It’s the moment a camper tries something new and realizes, “I can do this.”

And if you haven’t experienced it yet… this is the summer to do it.

At its core, Camp Esquagama has always been about something simple and powerful:
giving kids time to be kids.

In a world that moves fast and asks a lot of them, camp is a place where kids can slow down, unplug, and just be themselves. They get to explore, build confidence, make real friendships, and discover who they are—without the pressure of everything else going on around them.

Every year, we see it happen.
A camper who was nervous on day one leaves feeling at home.
A new activity turns into a new passion.
Friendships form that carry far beyond a single week of summer.

As we head into Summer 2026, we’re incredibly excited for what’s ahead. We’re continuing to build on the momentum of past seasons.  Growing our programs, welcoming an amazing team of staff, and creating even more opportunities for campers to shape their own experience each day.

Whether that means spending hours at the waterfront, mastering a new skill like archery or climbing, or simply relaxing in a hammock with friends, every camper gets to create a summer that’s uniquely their own.

And while we’re always improving the spaces and programs around camp, what truly makes this place special hasn’t changed, it’s the people, the connections, and the moments that stay with you long after summer ends.

Whether your camper is joining us for the first time or returning for another year, we are so excited to welcome them into this community.

We’re ready for another unforgettable summer and we’re so glad you’re a part of it.

See you at camp.

What Makes Camp Esquagama Special

Camp Esquagama is more than just a place to spend a week in the summer, it’s a place where kids grow, connect, and discover who they are.

We believe camp should feel like a second home. A place where every camper is known by name, encouraged to try new things, and supported every step of the way.

From the moment campers arrive, they become part of a community that values kindness, curiosity, and simply enjoying the moment.

🌲 Life at Camp Esquagama

There’s never a dull moment at Camp Esquagama.

Campers ages 4–17 join us from mid-June through mid-August, stepping into a week filled with adventure, connection, and new experiences. From the moment they arrive, campers are surrounded by others their age, making it easy to build friendships and feel part of something right away.

Each day is a balance of energy and choice.  Time spent exploring activities, laughing with cabin mates, and creating moments that quickly turn into lifelong memories.

🎯 Skill Development Through Experience

At camp, every camper is encouraged to try something new, but there’s also space to grow in the things they already love.

Whether it’s hitting the target in archery, climbing a little higher on the wall, creating something in arts & crafts, or spending time at the waterfront, our staff is there to guide, encourage, and support each camper along the way.

Some campers try everything. Others find their passion and stick with it. Both paths are exactly what camp is all about.

🏕️ Cabin Life & Friendships

Campers are placed into cabin groups based on age, creating a natural environment where friendships form quickly.

We do our best to honor friend requests when submitted in advance, but it’s worth noting, many campers arrive not knowing anyone and leave with a whole group of new friends.

Cabins turn into teams.
Teammates become friends.
And before long, camp starts to feel like home.

🍽️ Meals & Gathering Together

The dining hall is more than just a place to eat, it’s where camp comes together.

Meals are shared family-style with cabin groups, giving campers time to connect, laugh, and share stories from their day. Many meals even begin with a camp song, adding to the energy and tradition of the experience.

Our kitchen provides a variety of healthy, satisfying options, including hot meals and a full salad bar with fresh fruits and vegetables. We make sure campers are fueled and ready for a full day of activity.

We work to accommodate a wide range of dietary needs. If your camper has allergies or specific restrictions, simply note them during registration and we’ll work with you to make sure they’re taken care of.

🔥 Campfire Traditions

As the day winds down, campers gather around the fire at our waterfront amphitheater, one of the most memorable parts of camp.

Evenings are filled with songs, skits, laughter, and the kind of moments that have been part of Camp Esquagama for generations.

And of course… no campfire is complete without s’mores!

🌊 Waterfront Fun

Our waterfront is one of the most popular spots at camp, and one of the most flexible.

Campers can swim, paddle, and enjoy the lake throughout the week in the afternoons. All while under the supervision of trained lifeguards and our waterfront team. At the start of the week, campers complete a short swim assessment to help us create a safe and comfortable experience for everyone.

But waterfront time isn’t just for swimming.

Campers who prefer to stay dry still have plenty of ways to enjoy this part of the day. They might spend time playing games on shore, relaxing on the beach with a book, sitting in the sauna, or getting creative with crafts alongside friends.

Whether they’re in the water or on the shore, every camper gets to enjoy the waterfront in a way that feels right for them.

🍿 Canteen Time

Each day, campers get to enjoy a visit to the camp canteen, a simple but meaningful part of the camp experience.

There’s no need to send money. Each camper can choose up to two treats (snack & beverage) per day to enjoy with their friends.

We’ve also made updates in recent years to include more balanced and healthier options, while still keeping it fun.

🎉 A Meaningful Send-Off

At the end of the week, we come together one last time for our closing ceremony.

Families are invited to join as campers reflect on their experience, celebrate the week, and say their goodbyes (for now).

It’s a special moment and often when parents get to see just how much their camper has grown in just a few short days.
